Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a highly effective treatment option to prevent cavities. The chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars have pits and grooves that make them vulnerable to decay. Plaque accumulates in these areas, sometimes so narrow that a toothbrush can’t reach, and the acid from the bacteria attacks the enamel and cavities can develop.
A sealant is a thin plastic coating that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to fill in the grooves and prevent plaque from accumulating. The sealant bonds to the enamel and forms a protective shield. Although typically thought of as a preventive treatment for children, sealants are also effective for adults.
