Home Whitening Instructions

The home whitening treatment is an easy and effective treatment to brighten your smile. The custom-fitted tray confines the whitening gel in close contact with your teeth for maximum effect.

1. Floss and brush your teeth. Twist off the clear plastic cap from the syringe and replace with the mixing nozzle.
2. Place a small “teardrop” amount of gel, about the size of a pea, in each tooth compartment of the tray.
3. Place the tray with the gel in the mouth and position it over the teeth.
4. Remove excess gel with your finger or a dry toothbrush. There should not be much gel extruding from the tray on insertion. Excess gel on the gum tissue will cause gum irritation. You may see “bubbling” within your trays while wearing them. The bubbling is actually part of the whitening process.
5. Wear time is 15-20 minutes, twice daily. If you experience sensitivity, decrease daily wear time and increase days to your overall treatment. Optimal results are usually seen within 2 weeks. Please consult with Dr. Gumm before using longer than 2 weeks.
6. After whitening, remove and rinse the trays with cold water. Hot water may damage the trays. If necessary, use a toothbrush to remove any residual gel from the tray. Place the trays in the storage case, and store them in a cool, dry place. Rinse and brush excess gel from the teeth.
7. To keep your teeth bright, you may touch-up with the whitening gel every 3-6 months. Good results for touch-ups are usually achieved in only 2-4 days.
8. Please call the office if you have any questions.
