Gentle, Thorough Teeth Cleanings

gum disease

Gum disease can significantly harm a person’s oral health. It is an important condition to look our for and to treat when detected.

Dr. Gumm has special training in the care of the gums, including the treatment of gum disease. Gum disease involves bacterial infection and inflammation in the mouth and can cause serious damage if not treated—including loss of bone, gums and teeth.

During checkups and cleanings, Dr. Gumm keeps a careful eye out for any signs of gum disease, and he makes sure the disease is effectively treated when found.

Regular thorough cleanings help keep gum disease at bay, but proper at-home care is also necessary to keep your teeth and gums in good condition between visits. Our hygienists will educate you in the best oral care practices using models, photos and a small camera that shows detailed images of the inside of your mouth.

High-Tech Deep Cleanings

ultrasonic scalers teeth cleanings

Our hygienist uses an ultrasonic scaler to provide gentle yet effective deep cleanings.

Gum disease is most easily treated in its early stages, so it is important to keep an eye our for it and to treat it as soon as it is detected. The first stage of gum disease is called “gingivitis” and usually involves red edges around the gums and bleeding gums when flossing. Gingivitis is treated with a “deep cleaning,” a thorough dental cleaning that goes below the gumline.

Our hygienist provides gentle yet effective deep cleanings, making sure that patients are comfortable at all times. To increase patient comfort, she uses an ultrasonic scaler for part of the procedure. Ultrasonic scalers have a vibrating tip that effectively removes hardened plaque from the surfaces of the teeth and tooth roots. They tend to be more comfortable for patients than traditional scalers, and they are also gentler on teeth.
